The Horizon Scholarship

In partnership with industry sponsors, the AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship is an initiative supporting students enrolled in full time study at an Australian university.

AgriFutures Australia is committed to supporting the next generation of leaders that will drive the future prosperity of Australian rural industries and regional communities. To build prosperous and sustainable rural industries, AgriFutures Australia, along with our sponsors, understand the need to build the skills, capacity, leadership and knowledge of our future rural leaders. Students must be studying an agriculture-related degree or a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths/ Finance (STEM) with major studies and subject selections that align to agriculture.

  • Students must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Students must be enrolled in full-time study at an Australian university with a maximum two year gap between high school and tertiary study
  • Students must be enrolled in their first year of an agriculture-related OR Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) degree in 2018
  • Examples of suitable degrees include, but are not limited to; – Agricultural Science – Rural Science – Livestock/Animal Science – Veterinary Science – Agribusiness – Plant Science – Resource Management – Sustainability – Food Security – Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM) with major studies and subject selections relevant to and aligned with agriculture – Agricultural Economics
  • If applying for the Westpac scholarship, students must be in their second last year of a financial services degree, enrolled in full time study at an Australian University in 2018. Suitable degrees include banking or financial planning disciplines. Online applications for the 2018 AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship open on Monday, 8 January 2018 and close on Friday, 23 February 2018. All scholarship and application information can be found at agrifutures.com.au/horizon. Applicants must personally complete the online application form. Before beginning the application process, applicants are required to read the terms and conditions found on the website. By submitting an application, you are agreeing to these terms.

What do you receive?

A bursary of $5000 per year for the first two years of your degree (or last two years of your degree if you are awarded the Westpac scholarship)

  • Attend the annual Horizon Scholarship workshop – Four day workshop, held in June/July – Development of leadership skills and rural industries knowledge through a range of activities that promote teamwork, critical thinking, presentation skills and public speaking – Guest speakers, special guests and sponsors in attendance – commercial and industry leaders, researchers and politicians – Travel and accommodation provided (different location each year)
  • Annual industry work placement – Aligned with the student’s areas of interest and sponsor’s industry – Two weeks per year – Travel and accommodation provided
  • Opportunities to network and gain knowledge at a range of industry events.

Selection process

Once applications have closed, applicants will receive an email advising specific dates of the selection process and announcements. Following a review of all written applications, short-listed applicants will be contacted to participate in a phone interview with representatives from AgriFutures Australia and scholarship sponsors.

Due to the large number of applications received, applicants that are unsuccessful in being short-listed will not be contacted individually. Scholarships will be awarded following the phone interviews, based on an applicant’s passion, leadership potential, and genuine interest in contributing to the betterment of the agricultural sector. Alignment and interest to industry sponsors will be considered.
