Plan, organise, control, coordinate and undertake farm operations to breed and raise horses for competition, dressage, showjumping, riding for pleasure and work.
Tasks
- Consult with veterinarians and animal nutritionists to ensure animal health and nutrition
- Keep records
- Purchase animals
- Undertake administrative tasks such as marketing, budgeting, planning and management of physical and financial resources
- Select animals for mating
- Mate mares with selected stallions
- Supervise and manage equipment, facilities, pastures and staff
- Assist with foaling
- Train apprentice jockeys and stable hands
- Organise exercise and care of animals
- Supervise training of horses for competitions
Study Pathways
Most occupations in this unit group have a level of skill commensurate with a bachelor degree or higher qualification. At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 1).
